Castle Quarter Shortlisted at Property Awards 2019
8 Feb 2019
Castle Quarter has been shortlisted for The Placemaking Award at this year´s Property Awards. The awards ceremony will take place on 24 April in London.
The Castle Quarter site had previously lain undeveloped for many years and presented an eyesore within the City despite sitting in a key City Centre location. The site sits on a steep slope, within the Wind Street Conservation Area and immediately adjacent to Swansea Castle which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The presence of such a carefully protected set of neighbouring buildings and a very complex relationship with existing adjoining buildings presented significant Architectural, technical and construction challenges.
The Design Brief set by Coastal Housing Group was to create a mixed-use development that comprised commercial uses, together with a blend of affordable apartments and private residential units. The Holder Mathias winning proposal was for the creation of two large commercial units at ground floor that included large external terraces that took full advantage of the opportunity for outside dining with views directly to the Castle.
The Castle Quarter project has introduced a new resident population and new commercial units into the heart of Swansea City Centre introducing a vibrancy to an area which has been derelict for years.
