Holder Mathias secures planning consent for Swansea scheme

Holder Mathias has secured planning consent for an £8m scheme that will transform the historic heart of Swansea.
Working on behalf of client Coastal Housing Group, planning permission has been secured for Castle Quarter – a mixed-use development overlooking Swansea Castle. It will consist of 8,000 sq ft of restaurants and cafes, 26 affordable apartments and four duplex private apartments.
Castle Quarter follows on from the £30m Urban Village development on High Street and the Strand, also led by Coastal Housing Group and designed by Holder Mathias. It is hoped both mixed-use schemes will introduce vitality into this area of the city, while recognising its historical importance.
Terry Morley, partner at Holder Mathias, said: “This site is hugely important for Swansea and will create a striking new quarter for the city that places the castle at its heart.
“Together with the Urban Village development, this scheme will hugely enhance the existing qualities of the area, making the most of a much-loved but underutilised asset to the town. Not only this, but it will facilitate greater connectivity across the city as well as create an impressive gateway.”
Demolition is complete and a contractor is in the process of being appointed. It is hoped the project will start onsite in spring 2013 and be complete by summer 2014.
