The Interchange is an integral component of the £400M major regeneration of Central Square in the heart of Cardiff city centre, that also comprises: the new BBC Wales Headquarters building (built); 2 multi-tenant office buildings (built); a new public open space (built), the new regional offices for HMRC (built), a Build-to-Rent tower building (planning permission granted but yet to be built). Legal & General’s investment into Central Square has been a significant driver in Cardiff becoming one of the fastest growing employment hubs in the UK and once fully complete will create space for 13,000 new employment opportunities and over 600 new apartments for rent. Construction of “The Interchange” building began in December 2019 and completed in July 2023. The bus and coach station opened to the public in June 2024.
The Interchange itself is a complex mixed-use building that forms the eastern side / frontage of Central Square, adjacent to Cardiff Central Railway Station, and combines the following development components into a single building composition:
- Cardiff’s new 14-bay bus and coach station with associated retail and F&B outlets;
- a 231-space multi-storey car park;
- Legal & General’s new Wales Headquarters offices -123,000sqft net (160,000sqft gross) ‘Calon’;
- a 318-unit Build-to-Rent apartment block and tower with associated internal and external amenity spaces ‘Wood Street House’;
- a multi-function service island.
